On December 10, 2012, the FAA published a notice in the Federal Register of its intent to amend the AIP Grant Assurances to require general aviation airports to identify and mitigate wildlife hazards. Under the proposal, all non-Part 139 certificated airports who accept a new airport development grant funded under the Airport Improvement Program or accept a transfer of land under the Surplus Property Act for airport purposes would be required to conduct either a Wildlife Hazard Site Visit or a Wildlife Hazard Assessment, depending on the level of traffic at the airport. Comments on the proposed clarification must be submitted on or before January 31, 2013 (extended from January 9, 2013). Separately, the FAA has proposed to update two Advisory Circulars (Nos. 150/5200-32B and 150/5200-33C) and issue a new Advisory Circular (No. 150/5200-XX), all concerning wildlife hazards.
