On April 25, 2012, the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) signed the final rule governing the discharge of effluent in connection with deicing of aircraft and airfield pavements. The rule specifically establishes effluent limitations guidelines and new source performance standards for the Airport Deicing Point Source Category. In effect, the rule establishes technology-based and performance standards for deicing fluids and the discharge of deicing effluent into waters of the U.S. The U.S. EPA published its proposed rule in August 2009. The final rule will be published in the Federal Register.
